Number patterns

Square numbers
1     4     9     16     25     36     49     64     81     100
We're each going to do a post and a poster about a number we've chosen this week. To get ready we looked at some of the groups numbers can belong to:
  • square numbers
  • pyramid number
  • hexagon numbers
  • triangle numbers
Noémie has chosen the number eight, and found lots of ways of making eight!

Number patterns with Cuisenaire rods

Last term, in pairs, we had a go at creating sequences of cubes and understanding them. This week we've been trying a similar thing with Cuisenaire rods. And what a great lot of sequences we've created!

More challenging perhaps, is understanding the patterns and how they grow - and we mean understanding them mathematically.
Some of us got straight into the number crunching:
oops! - this one is not quite right!
We had to think really hard about our patterns (we still need to go over some of these again):

Some of us wanted to talk about our patterns:

The first in the sequence?

We had some interesting discussions about what the first step in the sequence should be. This pattern seems like the H family, but does it actually begin with a single cube. Its creators think so. Here they are, explaining their reasoning.

It wasn't the only first step we discussed. What about this one?
 How about these squares?
And what about this C family. Is one cube really the first step in the sequence?
We disagreed about this, even after six people gave their reasoning.
What do you think?

Patterns and Sequences

In Maths we have been looking out for patterns and number sequences.  We built our own sequences using multi-link or counters.

Can you identify our patterns?

Sequences and patterns

Just like 4B, 4G have been exploring the way patterns grow. We still need to pick apart the numbers involved, and the way these grow, but already we've got some great patterns. We had some good discussions about what the first step in these sequences should be. Are all of these right?

Maths Investigators!

On Tuesday we  brainstormed how many different numbers we could make from the digits 2, 8, 5 and 7.  We came up with lots of different ones.  Some of us became quite methodical in our thinking and started to see patterns and groups of numbers in our work.  Have a look at the photographs below.
Can you work out how we have been thinking?

Off to a good start!

Year 4 have started off the year as they mean to go on... learning and having fun.

Today we have started exploring tessellating shapes and have created some fascinating patterns.

We enjoyed this lesson very much and are eager to do some more work on tessellation!
