Su Hart - pictures

We continued our work with Su Hart during Thursday and Friday. Here's a slide show of some of the photos:

There was lots of brilliant - and quite challenging - music, lots of finding out about the Baka, and a fair bit of dancing too:

Su Hart

Su Hart is with us today. She has spent a lot of time with the Baka people in the rainforest of Cameroon.

Already we've got lots of questions:
We're learning to sing like the Baka too!

Trumpet manucode

The Trumpet manucode is a bird of paradise. Actually it is not the most colorful bird of paradise.

What makes it individual?

Actually the only amazing thing about this bird is dance because it doesn’t do a dance or show its plumage, so the only thing it does to attract the female is stare.

How big is it?

The male is around 31cm and 35cm. The female is much smaller.

Where does it live?

The black things are where they live.

How does the male attract females?

Indeed to attract a female it does nothing at all.

What does it eat?

It eats fruit and arthropods (minibeasts)

Painting Faces like Birds of Paradise

In Year 4 we each have our own bird of paradise. Here we are drawing each other's faces and changing them into ideas for a bird of paradise mask.

Birds of Paradise

Today we watched part of the DVD "Planet Earth":

Aren't birds of paradise amazing!

We're starting to look more closely at the different species:

Tuesday: there's also this one which we watched a little bit of:

You can see maps of where the different species live here. You can hear sounds here.

Borneo

Today we learnt a little about Borneo.
Part of Borneo is part of Indonesia, part of Borneo is part of Malaysia and part of Borneo is Brunei.
The green part is rainforest
Can you see what is happening in the aerial photo?
Oil palms are planted where the rainforest was
Of course, the orangutans have nowhere to live now! We watched a video of Willie Smits, who started to look after orphaned orangutans, and also to plant forest again.
With the help of a school in Borneo he started the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation to help rescue orangutans.

Our rainforest

Thanks to Miss Whittaker, our rainforest display in the corridor is looking brilliant! There's the leaves we printed, the animals we painted, and some of the first poems we wrote:

Toucan Kenning

A silent - seer
A massive- eater
A clumsy - flyer
A colorful-bill
A black – body
A blue - tail
A beneficial-beak
A playful - creature
A fruity - nibbler
A gregarious - bird

Baby Jaguar

My baby jaguar is my beloved.
He always hears birds and waterfalls
And smells flowers and fresh air.
Often he walks far into the sunset.

And his paws feel the leaves, grass and feathers
And they tickle his little paws,
And he likes it.

So I bring him out every sunset
And he gets happier and happier each day.

But in the winter something goes wrong
The sunset does not come
Out any more.

So my little baby gets sadder and sadder each day.
And if my little angel is sad
Then I am as well.

But at least summer comes back
And me and my baby
Are happy again.

Iguana

Sometimes I stay,sometimes I run.
Through the humid leaves.
I look!
I run!
To my comfy humid home.
And sit there sleeping until dawn.

When I was younger I used to play with my brothers.
And I lay there playing and playing.

Now that I am big and old.
I live alone hunting and bieng careful I am not hunted.

Now it is time to mate.
I mate
I need to make a nest.
So I pull the vines
And pull the lianas
And there I lay Making my holy nest.

Now that my hachlings have grown.
they are big and strong.
Its time to say Bye bye.

Poem without rhyme about "Tarantula"

I always see my  pray before catching it,
I catch it by waiting until  my pray comes and then I will KILL IT!!!,
then I digest for 30 minutes,
after digesting I can play chasing animals or reptil.

If I smell an animal or reptil sleeping I often kill it for my diner.

If you think TARANTULAS are not important I will bite you or inject some poison
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!.

When I taste my pray I can fell asleep BUT if I hear, touch or smell an animal or reptil I will wake up quickly and chased around.

Don't disturb me unless you want to go to the hospital.

From the most dangerous tarantula in the world.

The secrets of the rainforest

At the bottom of the deep green forest
there is a secret that has never been told…

a cold river gushing
a stunning fox hiding
a beautiful parrot flying
a colourful Parrot gliding

Keep your eyes open for them!

The Rainforest

In the Rainforest you might find...

a dangerous crocodile eating
an enormous snake fighting
a thirsty leopard drinking
a slow sloth sleeping
a colourful chameleon changing
a cute armadillo digging

So, watch out!

Rainforest List poem

Big snakes hissing,
Hairy monkeys swinging,
Scary tiger climbing,
Colourful parrots swooping,
Terrifying tarantulas crawling,
Pink flamingoes swaying.

Amazing Parrot

I always had lived here,

Looking at the sun,

Flying in the air,

Smelling tasty food,

And smelling the tremor,

I am safe in the sky,

Sometimes I hear,
Animals growling,
River shivering,
Waterfall sliding,
Birds and parrots squeaking,
And bees buzzing,
When I smell something,
I dive into rainforest,
And see lots of my favourite food,
With my long beck I cracked the coco,
Sometimes I like eating nuts,
When I go up in the sky,
I see the shinning sun,
And not the cold rain,
When there is the sun,
I circle around it,

When its raining I dive into the rainforest,

And have my nuts in my house,
When I go up I look down and see,
Huge ,medium and small trees,
Gigantic sliding waterfall,
Long ,small plants,
And animals looking for food,
Lots of animals hunt for me,
Special snakes,
They coiled up in the trees to get me,
Or hide in plants to get me,
But nothing can get me,
Like I can fly,
